Shelton Green
Governmental Affairs Manager

Governmental Affairs Manager, Texas Association of Business

On September 23, 2004 I accepted a position with the Texas Association of Business (TAB) as the association’s health care policy specialist.

Chief of Staff, State Representative Larry Taylor

Recently I served as the Chief of Staff to State Representative Larry Taylor and managed both his capitol and district offices. My responsibilities included handling all press inquires, writing press releases, editorials and articles. My duties also include formulating legislative policy and tracking the Representatives personal legislation through the legislative process. Representative Taylor served as a freshman during the 78th legislative session and was named “Freshman of the Year” by the House Republican Caucus.

Legislative Aide, State Representative Terry Keel

Immediately following my graduation from Schreiner College in the winter of 1998, I was hired by State Representative Terry Keel as a Legislative Assistant. In this position, I assisted in the preparation of legislative initiatives to be filed by Rep. Keel as well as monitoring the progress of each of his filed bills through the entire legislative process. This process includes scheduling of his bills for committee hearings, coordination of supporting witnesses, preparation of the Member’s testimony before committees and on the House floor, and coordinating with staff of Senate sponsors. My responsibilities also included analysis and monitoring the status of legislation filed by other members that is of interest to Rep. Keel and his constituents. Additionally, I supported Rep. Keel in his own duties as Vice Chair of the House Committee on Public Safety and as a Member of the House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence and the House General Investigating Committee. During the interim between legislative sessions, my responsibilities shifted somewhat to include more direct constituent issues and casework. I continued to support his committee work on interim assignments and also attend various meetings with other governmental agencies and the public on the Representative’s behalf.

Assistant State Director, Forbes 2000

Following the 1999 Texas legislative session, I joined the Steve Forbes Presidential campaign back in my home state of Alaska. From September to February, 1999‑2000, I worked in support of Steve Forbes’ effort to win the Alaska Republican Party Straw Poll. Straw polls are conducted by political parties to achieve two goals. The first goal is to energize voters within the party and the second is to attract new voters to the party. It is a mock election that has no official bearing on the party’s primary election. However, straw polls are a very accurate gauge of how people will vote in the official party primary in a given area. Our staff was small, comprised of a Director, Assistant Director (me), two Youth Coordinators and a small army of volunteers. We stayed busy every day of the campaign sending out dozens of direct mail pieces, coordinating door to door campaigns in neighborhoods, and sending volunteers to wave signs at intersections in the freezing cold. My responsibilities included handling office organization, campaign databases and press releases for the campaign. Mr. Forbes made several trips to Alaska. When he came to town, I was responsible for advance set up at events around the state and for driving Mr. Forbes from event to event. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked a national campaign. It is one of my proudest achievements.

Executive Director, Save the Dividend

Just before starting work on the Forbes Campaign, I was asked to run a state‑wide ballot measure campaign in Alaska. The issue was simple. The state of Alaska has a pot of money called the Permanent Fund which currently totals about 30 billion dollars. The state legislature asked the people of Alaska for authority to spend a part of that money. I ran one of two state‑wide ballot measure campaigns that advocated a "NO" vote. A "NO" vote told the state legislature they should not spend any part of the Permanent Fund. As a person six months out of college it was a daunting task. I debated on local radio morning shows, held press conferences with state Legislators and former Governors and traveled around the state educating Alaskans on the advisory vote. The vote was held on September 14th, 1999. 83% of Alaskans voted "NO."

Family

I was born in Anchorage, Alaska on May 1, 1976 to Curtis and Lyda Green. I am one of three children. My brother Bradley is married to Dianne and they live in Jackson, Tennessee. My sister Kristie lives in Kenai, Alaska and is married to Tuckerman Babcock.
